What do we mean by Storytelling?

This is a storytelling festival, but it may not be exactly what you expect. We are interested in the variety of ways that Appalachians tell authentic stories--traditionally and today. Yes, the oral storytelling tradition, but also authors, poets, musicians, songwriters, photographers, filmmakers, herbalists, quilters, performers, and many others that have and will continue to evolve over the years. We aim to balance the narrative about who Appalachians are, what they believe, and who they hope to be by giving them the space and place to share their stories in whichever form they take.

Do you have a story to tell? Do you love to listen to stories? Are you interested in learning how to tell a story... or how to better engage with them? Are you interested in seeing how different mediums carry vibrant stories?

This is the festival for you!

Mission:

Our Mission is to cultivate, nurture, and preserve a multigenerational celebration of community through the writing, reading, publishing, and performing of Appalachian stories in all forms: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. This festival aims to encourage creative expression and action in elevating authentic Appalachian stories to balance the narrative about our region.

Values:

We value authenticity, audacity, and creativity in storytelling; we believe in the importance of elevating and preserving Appalachian stories; and we recognize the value in celebrating powerful storytelling across generations.

Vision:

Our vision is for the power of storytelling to unite people from all over to experience an interactive, energetic fall festival designed to celebrate storytellers of all ages.
