Appalachian Understories Bike Tour

Nearly 70 years ago this community was a thriving Company Owned Town, the history of industry is still very much alive.

This 11.5 mile guided bike tour will explore the ruins of a town that has since been reclaimed by the Wayne National Forest. Thanks to the leadership of Elaine Lois Hutchinson, Norma Crane, Jack "Pete" Crane, Nancy Devol Rose, Larry Horn, Sr., the late Delbert Smith and partnership of the Wayne National Forest there is now a historic marker to commemorate Hopperville. Here, we will talk with Elaine and others about the cultural significance of this town. Many Haydenville and Hopperville residents will share their personal experiences of what it was like to live in this company town that is now the Wayne National Forest. With a rich history of multiple industries Haydenville has stories built into its architecture. Haydenville has some of the most unique architecture design in the state and at one point in the world.

This guided bike tour is free thanks to the Appalachian Literary Arts & Storytelling Festival!
